Symmetry & Chubby Pears

Pear shaped diamonds have a signature shape that mimics a teardrop. Rounded on one end and tapered on the other, it effectively combines the appearance of round and marquise cuts in one style.

Traditionally, a pear cut diamond features a pleasing symmetry where point of the tapered end perfectly aligns with the center of the rounded edge, and the curves on each side of the stone are identical. There is no standard length-to-width ratio of pear diamonds, but the classic dimensions are 50% longer than they are wide.

The Malbec 1.89 ring is a great example of a classic antique pear cut diamond ring.

Here at V. Barboné, we tend to favor the bold and source stones based on beauty. not specs. When it comes to pears that means one thing - chubby. You will often see us reference "chubby" pears as a dream ring.

So what is a chubby pear?

A chubby pear is pear that is bottom heavy and more stout than it is long. The Allie 3.91 ring is a perfect example of a dream chubby pear ring:

A Rich History

The first pear cut diamond made its debut in 1475, when jeweler Lodewyk van Bercken introduced the style to the masses. No stranger to diamonds, van Bercken also invented the tool used to precisely cut and polish facets into diamonds. Because facets are what cause a gemstone to radiate light, his tool revolutionized the diamond industry and literally changed the way that people would look at gemstones. Typically cut with 58-fascets, pear cut diamonds maintain such a radiant appearance and an absolutely brilliant sparkle!

Pear shaped diamond engagement rings have a long and glamorous history. In fact, one of history’s most legendary diamonds features this elusive cut. The Taylor-Burton Diamond is a 69-carat pear-shaped stone that was purchased for actress Elizabeth Taylor by her then husband, Richard Burton. With a value of nearly 20-million dollars, this decadent diamond was worn around the neck of the famous silver screen star during several red-carpet appearances!

Undeniably Glamorous

Pear diamonds aren’t just a favorite of Elizabeth Taylor. Famously fashionable women like Victoria Beckham, Anna Kournikova, and Princess Charlene of Monaco have also been spotted sporting pear cut engagement rings. You simply can’t go wrong with this style!

Special Meaning

In a world where everything is photographed and instantly shared, standing out from the crowd is more important—and more difficult—than ever before. Women who love to stand out and don’t want a ring like everyone else will appreciate the pear cut style.

The teardrop shape of the diamond is said to symbolize tears of joy, while the style itself is a testament to a woman who is bold and walks to the beat of her own drum. This style is perfect for an empowered woman with a flair for romance and elegance.
