The Tiffany Setting

Tiffany & Co. is credited with creating the solitaire engagement ring as we know it. Created by Charles Tiffany in the late 19th century, the “Tiffany setting” revolutionized diamond jewelry.

Earlier jewelry was often bezel-set, meaning it was set into the metal, giving it a flattened appearance. While this setting offers stability and protection for the stone, Charles Tiffany wanted to elevate the diamond—literally. His signature setting acted almost like a pedestal to raise the diamond and make it easier to view from a variety of angles.

But the Tiffany setting had an even more practical use. By uncovering more of the stone, this prong setting allows more light to pass through, giving the diamond a greater brilliance and, in some cases, revealing different color tones. This style also allows a wedding band to sit closer to the ring.
