Rings get dirty. That’s life. Maybe you were cooking or getting your hands dirty outside. Not to worry! You can get it looking fresh and sparkly again! Many people believe that vintage rings require professional care and handling, particularly when cleaning is required, but this isn’t the case! Here’s a simple guide on how to clean a vintage engagement ring at home. Here's what you need to know to keep your ring looking its best!

**A Note on Softer Stones**

If your vintage engagement ring contains emeralds, pearls, opals or other soft gemstones be sure to be very careful while cleaning and only use warm water (never hot water).

Inspect Before Cleaning

Before cleaning your engagement rings, be sure to check for any issues. If you think you may have damaged your ring, this step is crucial. Do not attempt to clean your ring if it is visibly damaged—e.g. a loose stone, broken metal, or setting irregularity. Professional repairs may need to be completed prior to cleaning.

How Often Should I Clean My Vintage Engagement Ring?

To keep your ring sparkling, we suggest cleaning it once a week.

How to Clean Your Vintage Engagement Ring at Home (step by step)

  1. Using a mixture of hot water and mild dish soap (hand soaps generally have moisturizers in them that can leave residue), let your ring soak for about 3-5 minutes.
  2. You can scrub it gently with an infant toothbrush, focusing on the underside as that is typically where dirt accumulates and dulls your diamond’s shine.
  3. Follow with a rinse in warm water, making sure the drain is covered.
  4. To dry, use a 100% cotton towel, let it air dry, or use a hair dryer.

Safety Check-up for Your Vintage Engagement Ring

We strongly recommend 6-month and 1-year prong and setting check ups to make sure your ring is as safe as the day you received it. You can always bring it to us for a complimentary cleaning and safety check.

Bonus tip! Proper storage is important for those times when you are not wearing your ring. A proper jewelry box, with soft lining, will help prevent wear and accumulation of dust and dirt. Use your AB-ring box to store your ring when not wearing it!
